Overthinking
Posted on January 9, 2009
I’ve long prided myself on being a thinker. Someone who can figure things out, often without having to go to the effort of actually trying them.
Laziness. Honestly, that’s just laziness.
One weekend last year , I worked with my first (ever!) model for a few hours – just trying different looks, and simply taking the best photos I could. I’d thought everything through, and thought I knew what i needed, I thought I was prepared.
I was nothing like.
Now, I got some good shots out of the day, some work I’m very happy with. But I learned a lot more from 4 hours of doing than I would have from a year of thinking. I learned what equipment I was lacking, I started learning about how to work with a model to get good results.
Now, I’ve worked with about 15 different models and have even more good photos, and I’ve learned more than I ever could have by thinking and reading about it. I’ve upgraded a lot of my equipment, and added a few things (and have more to add), learned a hell of a lot more about how to use what I have well.
Just thinking never would have got me to where I am now. It could not have substituted for actual experiences.
